It’s a jam-packed day in the global art market with major or important sales in Hong Kong, London, Amsterdam and Paris across a range of collecting areas. It would be easy to overlook Christie’s startling sale of Impressionist and Modern art held in Paris today if not for the very strong numbers for Alberto Giacometti and Zao Wou-ki. In a sale that cleared just shy of €20m (or almost $30m) there were surprise pops for Giacometti paintings and sculptures.
Lot 40, Giacometti‘s Portrait de Maurice Lefebvre-Foinet was estimated at the high end for €1m but sold for €2.249m
- Lot 119 Giacometti‘s La Vide Poche wasn’t supposed to go for more than €200k but bidders drove it to €1.8m
- Lot 60 Zao Wou-ki‘s 5.11.64 is estimated up to €400k but follows the momentum from Hong Kong to sell for €817k
