Sotheby’s 19th Century paintings sale in London pulled in $11.857m with 70% of the 178 lots sold. The high estimate for the sale was £6m and the total was in excess of £7m. According to Sotheby’s, 41% of the lots sold above their high estimates. Several German paintings sold for many times the estimate range, these included some works that came on the market as the result of restitution claims.
