
The Moment fingers the place to eat when you’re an artist in Berlin:
Bar 3 and its new little sister, Restaurant 3, are second homes to Berlin’s art community. “You know that bar where the whole ’60s L.A. art scene used to hang out?” said Jessica Backus, the assistant director of Peres Projects Berlin. “The saying in L.A. at the time was that if it caught on fire, then the entire L.A. art world would have vanished overnight. That’s basically what Bar 3 is for Berlin.”
Since 2006, the one-room watering hole, located behind Mitte’s iconic Volksbühne theater, has been local artists’ unequivocal location for post-vernissage glasses of 2-euro wine and pints. Now the same crowd is augmenting its alcoholic intake with a healthier form of after-opening socializing at Restaurant 3. “It’s a constant turnaround of post-studio-day jeans and heels clacking,” observed the video artist Cecile B. “Eating here is just like having a friend make you dinner,” said the Berlin art dealer Johann König before finishing his espresso ice cream and moving next door to continue with friends at Bar 3. “It feels that warm.”
