No Containers at ArtBasel Miami

October 13, 2009 by Marion Maneker

Miami’s New Times is sad that shipping containers converted into temporary gallery booths for Art Positions, a satellite fair of ArtBasel Miami, won’t be back this year as organizers move more of the fair under one roof which means “emerging” galleries and artists will now be at the center of the fair. The New Times fears bringing these marginal figures to the center of the fair will dampen party environment:

Instead, the Art Positions area will feature a “three-dimensional environment” designed by multimedia artist Pae White. The so-called social space will feature discussions, concerts, and performances. Art Positions, especially on opening night, has more of a party atmosphere than the often deathly serious mood at the convention center. Combined with the unique aspects of showing inside a container, it often led to a bit more levity that might be overshadowed inside the convention center.

No More Big Orange Containers of Wonderfulness at Art Basel (Miami’s New Times)
