September 24, 2009 by Marion Maneker

olympia_1488301cThis Magritte painting, Olympia which is valued according to conflicting reports at between $1m and $4m, was stolen from a museum created out of Magritte’s home by armed bandits, according to this report in the Telegraph:

“Two individuals, one of them Asian – one speaking French, the other English – came into the museum armed with a pistol shortly after it opened” at around 10am (0800 GMT), Andre Garitte said.

“The two men, whose faces weren’t covered, forced two or three employees to lie down in the courtyard of the museum,” he said. One of the thieves then climbed a glass panel protecting the work from the public and stole it.

The painting depicts Magritte’s wife, Georgette.
