San Diego’s Museum of Art is doing a little Alexander Calder double-header with the artist’s jewelry–a hot item on the auction market these last two or more years–and larger show with Calder along side Picasso and Miró. The local public radio station has a good interview with the curating couple that put on both shows. You can listen to it here: (Calder Curating Couple)
Considering Calder’s enjoyment of watching art move, it may not come as much surprise to learn that he also designed jewelry, for a very limited and exclusive clientele. Calder’s jewelry, earrings, necklaces, even tiaras, are unique, beautiful and movable. Ninety of his Jewelry pieces are now on view at the San Diego Museum of Art. And just down the hall, there’s an exhibit of works by Calder and artists Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.
