Colin Gleadell reports the results from the British Art Fair just held in in the capital city:
London’s first big fair of the season, the 20/21 British Art Fair at the Royal College of Art, closed on Sunday with the majority of dealers expressing satisfaction at the level of sales. Of the dealers I canvassed, 18 of them had amassed combined sales of some 150 paintings and sculptures. Prices ranged from a few hundred pounds into six figures. A fine Ben Nicholson still life from the 1930’s with Offer Waterman & Co with an asking price of £185,000 was one of several works by the artist to find a buyer. Other popular artists were Mary Fedden, top price for whom was a punchy 60,000 pounds for a large painting with Anthony Hepworth, and Robert Adams. Gimpel Fils sold three works by the abstract sculptor (see feature), and Robin Katz Fine Art another – all priced between £15,000 and £38,000. While some dealers said buyers were busy negotiating prices, others, like Jenna Burlingham at Offer Waterman, were rejoicing that “the city buyers are back.”
