The National Portrait Gallery is adding a print of Andy Warhol’s portrait of Ted Kennedy to the collection on the occasion of his death:
The National Portrait Gallery installed an Andy Warhol portrait of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on Thursday in a gallery that has recently been converted to portray prominent U.S. figures who have died. […] The portrait is a memorable image of Kennedy’s 1980 presidential campaign. […] The portrait was created in 1980 to raise money for Kennedy’s campaign. Warhol incorporated subtle colors of the American flag and diamond dust as special features in the print, which was reproduced as a campaign poster. “Color is integral (to Warhol’s work) and obviously it made sense to think about red, white and blue for a political campaign,” Carr said. “It’s both subtle and obvious.”
