London's Biggest Jewel Heist and a Van Gogh

August 27, 2009 by Marion Maneker

The Art Loss Register‘s latest notice of stolen work includes the proceeds of a daylight robbery from Graff Jeweler’s London location on Aug. 6th  where the thieves made off with over 1000cts in combined gemstones. Arrests have been made in the armed robbery but the jewels remain missing.

In addition, the Art Loss Register records this theft:

An original Vincent Van Gogh drawing was stolen from a private residence in New Mexico on May 13, 2009. The charcoal drawing is presumed to be a preliminary sketch for Van Gogh’s Night Café, currently in the collection of Yale University. The drawing had never been catalogued or exhibited prior to the theft. However, due to the drawing’s provenance, and the mention of such a sketch in one of Van Gogh’s letters, it is presumed to be genuine. Unfortunately, the only photo ever taken of the drawing is very poor.
