Sands Makes a Point

June 18, 2009 by Marion Maneker

Culture Monster’s Mike Boehm reports that Fred Sands, an LA real estate figure, has donated $2 million to the operating budget of the museum. An anonymous donor has also given $1 million:

Fred SandsSands, a board member since 2002, was involved in establishing MOCA 30 years ago.

“I fought for its founding and I will fight for its future today,” he said in a statement released by the museum. “I believe there is great potential to continue MOCA’s legacy of outstanding programming for many years to come, and I am delighted to be able to support the museum at this defining moment.”

So there’s $3 million in the kitty for operating expenses, in addition to another $7 million raised since January. The first two gifts are not for the museum’s endowment and will not be matched by Eli Broad.
