Gerard Malanga on Warhol's Death and Disaster Series

June 17, 2009 by Marion Maneker

Green Car Crash Video

Two years ago, Christie’s sold a big Death and Disaster Warhol painting for a record price of more than $70m. To market Green Car Crash, Brett Gorvy taped an interview with Warhol’s studio assistant during this period, Gerard Malanga. In the video, they discuss the background behind the Death and Disaster series and the Tuna Fish paintings in particular, especially the reason why so few examples of the Tuna Fish imagery were made. With Sotheby’s selling one of the few canvases next week in London, the video is worth another look.
