South Asians Beguiled by Jewels

May 15, 2009 by Marion Maneker

With little attempt to conceal their pride, India’s Economic Times highlights the increased participation of Indian buyers in Sotheby’s recent sale of jewelry:

Sotheby’s jewels auction in Geneva lately has attracted Indian clients in a big way. These collectors participated on the floor, via the telephone and through written bids. Indian collectors have been broadening their collecting categories to include Indian art, western contemporary art, modern and impressionist art, watches, as well as jewellery.

“We are delighted that many of our Indian clients participated in the jewels auction. This strong interest from the subcontinent is very encouraging as we continue to serve our South Asian clientele worldwide,” Ms Maithili Parekh, Sotheby’s deputy director, told ET.
