Blue Cullinan Diamond Sells for $9.5m in Geneva

May 12, 2009 by Marion Maneker

Sotheby’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale brought in nearly $35.8 million. $9.5 million of that was for one 7 carat blue diamond from the Cullinan mine. That’s $1.349 million per carat which is a record. Reuters describes the sale: “The rectangular-shaped blue stone, the rarest to enter the international market this year, went to an anonymous buyer bidding by telephone after hectic bidding see-sawed between two callers for 15 minutes.”
