Katya Kazakina of Bloomberg gets into “Guest of Cindy Sherman,” a new film:
“It’s a Cindy Sherman story, it’s an art world story, and then there’s a guy-and-a-stronger-woman-story,” said Hasegawa- Overacker, 54, clad in brown pinstripe suit and white open- collar shirt, in an interview at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York.
He’s the film’s main character — unsurprisingly since he was Sherman’s boyfriend for a while. Art world insiders also know him as Paul H-O of the cable television show “Gallery Beat” in the 1990s. H-O and his buddy Walter Robinson, currently editor of Artnet magazine, had an off-beat attitude that poked fun at the art world’s high self-regard. Their shaky, cinema-verite footage accounts for some of the funniest moments in the film.
He strips for Spencer Tunick’s installation featuring hundreds of naked people and stands his ground when an angry Julian Schnabel calls his program “idiotic.”
