The Versace sale is going great guns in London. Even with the top lot withdrawn, the numbers are a repeat of the YSL sale. Obviously the provenance is a great draw because few of the works are exceptional pieces. Take this cast of Canova’s Pugilists Creugas and Damoxenos that sold for £433,250 (or more than $600,000) against an estimate of £20-40,000. Versace had the statues in his bedroom which only furthers the impression that the value of the work comes from the proximity to the designer.
