London Preview, Contemporary Art

June 30, 2008 by Marion Maneker

Last Week’s Impressionist and Modern Sales Whetted the Appetite

One of the interesting facts released by one of the auction houses last week was the large crossover between the Contemporary sales and Impressionist and Modern sales with 68% of the Impressionist and Modern buyers at Sotheby’s having also participated in the Contemporary sales. With that in mind, let’s look at what’s on offer this week through the eyes of the press:

The Wall Street Journal focuses on Freud, Bacon, Koons, Basquiat and Riley. The New York Sun goes over much of the same ground but dwells on Phillips’s McCarthy and Hirst. Luxist gives us a nice slide show of Bacon, Prince, Warhol and Basquiat. Christie’s is the star of Art Daily’s in-depth look. And the Economist tells you more than you ever wanted to know about transporting the Koons balloon sculpture.
