Even Goya Got Bought In

May 27, 2008 by Marion Maneker

Three Goya Drawings Lost Since 1877 Sale Re-Surface at Christie’s

Beneath the justifiable excitement over the discovery of three lost Goya drawings, is the curious fact that even a great master can have a bad day on the auction block. Two of the three sketches to be sold at Christie’s in London in the Old Masters sale had failed to find a buyer in a famous 1877 auction of work from Goya’s sketchbook. That turns out to have been fortuitous because now all three drawings are in spectacular condition. The Swiss family who owned the drawings had not know their importance.
