Melanie Gerlis reports on Bonhams success with two works by Fahrelnissa Zeid, the Turksih painter who was the subject of a Tate Modern show earlier this year. Just before that exhibition, a record £992k was spent on a huge abstract work from 1953.
That’s not the only kind of work she made and Bonhams was able to make some progress on her market with two portraits being sold by Princess Alia Al Hussain of Jordan:
Two very different works — a 1973 portrait of the late King Hussein of Jordan and one of his daughter Princess Alia Al Hussein from 1982 — sold for £97,000 and £188,000 respectively at Bonhams’ Middle Eastern art sale on Tuesday (£121,250 and £234,350 with premium, both estimated £50,000-£70,000).
